Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 15–40 m tall.

Stems: Bark gray to grayish brown, fibrous or tessellate throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades ovate to broadly lanceolate, 9–14 cm long, 2.5–4 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 15–20 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 3–7 in umbels arranged in terminal, corymbose inflorescences, peduncles 15–35 mm long, pedicels 10–30 mm long. buds clavate, 7–14 mm long, 7–10 mm wide; operculum depressed–hemispherical, apiculate. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum flattened. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; filaments cream or pink; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit urceolate; 30–50 mm long; 28–40 mm wide; valves included. Seeds terminally winged.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted on O'ahu and Hawai'i; and at least maintaining populations.
